Frontline

Probably the most popular, Frontline not only kills fleas, but it also kills ticks. It can usually kill the flea eggs within 24 hours and is also highly toxic to adult fleas. One more fantastic thing about Frontline is that it doesn’t wash off like a lot of other medications, so bathing is simple.

Advantage

Advantage is a topical solution for getting rid of fleas by Bayer. Bayer says the product kills 98% of the fleas in 12 hours, but Advantage does not kill the flea eggs. They highlight that it kills the eggs before they are hatched.

Advantage works almost instantly to kill the fleas on your pets; it is water-resistant and is sufficient for one month. It has a neurotoxin that immediately destroys the fleas on contact. They say the treatment will kill almost all fleas on your pet within hours. The drawback of Advantage is that it doesn’t kill ticks or eggs.

K9 Advantix

Another solution from Bayer, K9 Advantix, is beneficial for dogs for getting rid of fleas and ticks.  It can kill fleas, ticks, and mosquitoes. It is a powerful and safe medication for your pup.

Just make sure that if you’re using this medication to keep it away from your cats. Medication, if used on cats, can cause seizures and death!

However, you will find that the application process involves putting a few drops of the flea treatment behind your pet’s head and along his spine.

The medicine will dissipate throughout the layer of fat right under the skin and remain effective, even after your pet has been bathed or gone swimming.

NexGard is a new product from Frontline, and what makes this different than the others is that it is not a topical solution; it is an insecticide that works from the inside of the dog, effectively killing the fleas by poisoning them as the fleas bite the dog.

NexGard is a prescription-only medication and has a few side effects, so talk to your veterinarian. I have witnessed the miracle of this treatment with my dog; she’s a Labrador who had an outbreak of fleas last year.
